Pre-Modifiers give a restaurant the ability to add text either before (prefix) or after (suffix) a Modifier. Pre-Modifiers are a standard feature of the Toast POS system. When you create a Modifier Group, you can create a set of Pre-Modifiers such as NO, SUB, ADD, EXTRA, or ON THE SIDE to easily notify the kitchen of specifications to an Item that has many ingredients, such as a burger or a salad.
Note: There are restrictions in using Pre-Modifiers. They are NOT supported in the Inventory module or the Online Ordering module. Further, they DO NOT appear in reporting.

Creating Pre-Modifier Options
The first step is to create Pre-Modifier Groups and Options. To begin, navigate to the Menu section of Toast's back-end and select Pre-Modifiers.
Begin creating Pre-Modifier Groups by selecting the + button. Then, type the Group name. In the below example we've added "Sandwich Mods." Be sure to save your changes.
After you have saved the Pre-Modifier Group name, a [Click Here to Define] option appears. Select it to add Pre-Modifier Options.
Select + Add Pre / Post Modifier to add Pre-Modifier Options.
The properties of Pre-Modifiers are as follows:
- Name: Name as it will appear on the check for the customer (ex. spell out 'on side' instead of abbreviated 'OS')
- Multiply Price: Whether or not you want to multiply the price. (ex. multiply NO by 0 so it doesn't cost anything)
- Fixed Price: Fixed price for each Pre-Modifier Option (ex. all extras $0.50)
- Multiplication Factor: How much to multiply the cost of the Option (ex. multiply NO by 0)
- Display Mode: Whether the Pre-Modifier should be before or after the Modifier. (ex. prefix ADD Bacon and suffix Bacon ON SIDE)
- Color: Button color as it will appear on the device
- POS Name: Name as it will appear on the POS. You can have a different Name and POS Name
- Kitchen: Name as it will appear on the printed kitchen ticket or the kitchen display screen (KDS)
Assigning Pre-Modifiers to Modifier Groups:
After creating Pre-Modifier Groups and Options, the next step is to assign them to Modifier Groups. Navigate to the Modifier Group you'd like to add the Pre-Modifier Group to. Navigate to the Properties section and select the Group you've just created from the Pre-Modifier Group section.
Note: If you do not see the Pre-Modifier Group you're looking for, make sure that you're editing a Modifier Group, NOT a Menu Group or an Item.
